Have you heard of Alexander Pushkin, a famous Russian poet, an author of «Eugene Onegin», «The Queen of Spades» and other masterpieces? If you want to learn more about these last years of life, immerse into the atmosphere of Pushkin’s times, visit Alexander Pushkin Museum and Memorial Apartment.
The museum to commemorate the poet is located in the center of St Petersburg, not far from the Palace square and Nevsky prospekt. There, on Moyka River Embankment 12, Pushkin’s family rented an apartment starting from September 1836. Actually this place is the former mansion of Volkonsky family. There in February 1837 Alexander Sergeevich died, being fatally wounded in the duel with Georges-Charles d’Anthès.
After the poet’s death, the apartment went under several major renovations. In autumn 1924 the former Pushkin’s flat was transferred under the governance of the community “Old Petersburg”, which decided to bring the place the initial look. The memorial apartment was reconstructed on the basis of the evidence of the contemporary and a range of historical documents. The first museum opened here in 1927.
Today the museum has lots of authentic items that belonged to Pushkin and his wife. For instance, his working table and favourite armchair, a travelling case, a smoking pipe, an inkwell. In his wife’s room you can see her portrait by A.P. Bruillov, a coral bracelet, purses, bottles of perfumes and other memorable accessories. In other rooms of the museum you can view the portraits of Alexander and other family members.
The collection of the museum includes the things related to Pushkin’s duel and death: a vest that the poet had on during the duel, a curl of hair cut on request of I.S.Turgenev, a death mask by a sculptor S.I. Galberg and an authentic divan the poet died on on January 29th, 1837.
On the first floor of the museum you can get to know the story of the old house, Pushkin’s life in 1836. You’ll also can get familiar with the pre-duel story and the responses of Pushkin’s contemporaries on his death.
