Christmas and New Year is a very beautiful, special and truly magical season, no matter where you celebrate it. However, if you by chance end up in Saint Petersburg during the holidays, you are a lucky one. There are many interesting events and entertaining activities during the New Year night in Saint Petersburg.
Traditional celebration
Saint Petersburg is decorated long before the celebration night, and you can enjoy the New Year mood in advance simply walking around the brightly adorned city center, for instance, along Nevsky Avenue.
There are many Christmas trees in the city, but the main one is located on the Palace Square. Actually, the square becomes the main celebration place at the Night Year night. The theatrical performance and concerts start at around 10 pm on December 31st. Many famous artists, dancing and musical bands perform at the stage, while Ded Moroz (Father Frost) with Snow-maiden share joy with the audience. At midnight the sky is lit with a New Year fireworks. Another fireworks will take place at the Spit of Vasilievsky Island.
It is actually said that from year to year the celebration becomes more and more beautiful. A fete continues until 4 am.
In 2019 the Father Frost from Veliky Ustyug will arrive in Saint Petersburg on December 21st. At 18:00 he will light up the Christmas Tree at the Palace Square.
In fact, there will be three main celebration areas: close to the Winter Palace, Gostiny Dvor and at Malaya Konuyshennaya. There will be huge fireworks at 3:00, launched from the Peter and Paul Fortress. Actually, on the Hare island you’ll be able to see the ice figures. Come here with children, as there will be a special entertaining program for children.
Car drivers, be ware that movement along Nevsky Avenue will be closed on from 21:00 December 31 until 4:00 January 1. Good news is that public transport and underground will work all night long.
