The State Hermitage museum is one of the largest museums in the world along with the Louvre in Paris, The National Gallery and The British Museum in London, and the Prado Museum in Madrid. Its collection includes approximately 3 million exhibits. The collection of the Western European paintings has earned worldwide fame, and the main reason for this is that it has pieces of art dating to the 13th century and all the way until the 20th century, which means 7 throughout centuries all together. Among the most well-known pieces are works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, El Greco, Diego Velázquez, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt; painting in the impressionist and post-impressionist styles. Among European sculptures, there are pieces by Michelangelo, Falconet, Canova, Rodin and many other outstanding artists.

St Isaak’s Cathedral was named after reverend Isaac the Dalmatian, a Byzantium monk that lived in the 4th century. The fourth and the last version of the church recognized as a masterpiece of the 19th century’s architecture, that was built in 1858 by the design proposed by the French architect, August de Montferrand. Its construction took approximately 40 years, and including the interior design cost the treasury around 24 million Rub. In total, there are 112 monolithic columns of varying sizes in the cathedral and over 350 sculptures. The dome’s gilding required around 150 kilograms (331 lbs.) of gold. The area of the ceiling painting of the main dome is 800 square meters (8,611 square feet), and the total area of mosaics is 530 square meters (5,705 square feet).

The Cathedral of Resurrection of Christ is a monument of the Russian architecture in the spirit of romantic nationalism that dates back to the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It was built on the site at which on March 1st, 1861 the member of People’s Will party, Ignacy Hryniewiecki, fatally wounded Emperor Alexander the 2nd. Because of this the cathedral is more often referred to as the Temple of the Savior on Spilled Blood. The most important and unique feature in the decoration of the Temple of the Savior on Blood is the utilization of mosaic images and compositions. Their whole area totals over 7,000 square meters (75,347 square feet), which is one of the largest collections of monumental mosaics in Europe.

Peter and Paul fortress . In 1703 Peter the 1 st made the decision to build a new fortress that would have all of the technological advancements of the time. The island with the Finnish name “Enisaari” which means “Hare Island” in Russian located in the River delta of the Neva River was picked as the place where to build the new fortress. The foundation of the fortress called Sankt Petersburg (in the German manner) was initiated. It honored the saint Apostle Peter, the guardian angel of the Russian tsar and Russia itself. The name of this fortress spread onto the city that was founded and quickly spread next to it. The fortress itself was named after one of its own parts – the cathedral, located right in its center, which was named after the saints Paul and Peter and became the burial place of Russian Emperors beginning with Peter the Great.
